Don Bosco College Golaghat Celebrates International Women’s Day with Empowerment Events and Community Outreach

Golaghat, March 9, 2026 – Don Bosco College Golaghat marked International Women’s Day on March 9 with a vibrant program at the DBCG Assembly Hall, themed “Give to Gain.” Organized by the Research Cell in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, NSS, and Women’s Cell, the event promoted gender equality, women’s empowerment, and health awareness through speeches, seminars, cultural activities, and community engagement. The program benefited around 300 students and staff along with 100 women and girls.

The program, hosted by Lily Teresa Jojo, kicked off with a welcome address by Tingdan Wangsu. Principal Dr. Fr. A. Amaladoss urged the audience to champion gender equality across all spheres of life. He also traced the historical journey and significance of International Women’s Day, inspiring staff and students with stories of trailblazing women like Mother Teresa, Mary Kom, and Sania Mirza.

Chief guest Angkita Borportara Gohain, Assistant Professor of Commerce at Golaghat Commerce College, delivered a compelling talk on modern challenges facing women, emphasizing education, awareness, and equal opportunities. She motivated the girls to aim high, achieve success through hard work and discipline.

The Research Cell hosted an interdepartmental seminar with student poster presentations showcasing analytical insights on various topics such as Women in Literature, Women Representation in the Politics of Assam, Reproductive Health Status of Women in India, and so on displays highlighted students' grasp of pressing societal issues.

The celebrations featured a Rangoli-making competition symbolizing women’s roles in care, unity, rights, and resilience. Participants used vibrant motifs: Pink for the lotus (purity and Mother India); Yellow for joyful moments; Red for power and confidence; Green for growth; Orange for vibrant lifestyles and Purple for happiness.

Rangolis depicted the life cycle of women, their family and national sustenance, and the boundless mother-child bond. B.A. 4th and 2nd Semester students performed a song, 6th Semester students danced, and speeches by teacher Gaurav Dey and student Krishna Urang reflected on the day’s significance. Poster and Rangoli competitions added flair.

Under Merina Lakra, Assistant Professor of Sociology, the NSS Unit extended the celebrations to women and girls of Golaghat. Volunteers led an interactive session on menstrual hygiene for women and adolescent girls, featuring demonstrations by NSS volunteer Limka on proper sanitary pad use, hygienic practices, and safe disposal to prevent health and environmental risks. Participants shared concerns freely in a stigma-breaking environment. The event concluded with sanitary pad distribution to support menstrual health access.

Dr. Piyali Dutta delivered the vote of thanks, appreciating the resource person, organizers, participants, and audience for a resounding success. The initiatives fostered unity, broke menstrual taboos, and empowered the community, embodying NSS’s spirit of service.
