Don Bosco College, Golaghat, organised a National-Level Workshop on Research Methodology with the objective of strengthening research aptitude, methodological understanding, and academic writing skills among students, teachers, and aspiring researchers. The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 150 participants, including students and academic participants from Don Bosco College, Golaghat; Debraj Roy College, Golaghat, Furkating College, Golaghat; H.P.B. College, Golaghat; Birangana Sati Sadhani University, and other nearby institutions. The workshop commenced with spot registration, followed by the inaugural function. The programme began with the welcome address by Dr. Fr. A. Amaladoss, SDB, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising knowledge, enlightenment, and the pursuit of academic excellence.

The inaugural session featured a Keynote Address by Prof. B. Komow, Dean, Research and Development Cell, Arunachal University of Studies (AUS), Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking on the theme “Process of Inquiry,” Prof. Komow highlighted the importance of curiosity, systematic inquiry, critical thinking, and a structured approach to research. He emphasised that meaningful research begins with the ability to ask relevant questions and pursue them through systematic investigation. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Asst. Prof. Abhinav Todi, IQAC Coordinator. The workshop proceeded with four technical sessions covering various aspects of the research process. The first technical session was conducted by Dr. Fr. Paul Punii, SDB, Principal, Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, Nagaland. His session focused on “Finding a Research Topic and Formulating a Research Problem, Literature Review & Referencing Styles.” He provided participants with practical guidance on identifying relevant research topics, formulating clear and researchable problems, and conducting an effective review of existing literature. He also elaborated on academic referencing and citation practices, explaining widely used styles such as APA, MLA, and Chicago. The session highlighted the importance of proper citation and referencing in maintaining academic integrity and avoiding plagiarism.

The second technical session was conducted by Dr. Piyali Dutta, Department of Political Science, Don Bosco College, Golaghat. Her session, titled “Understanding Research: Types, Approaches, Research Problems and Research Questions,” introduced participants to the fundamental concepts of social science research. Dr. Dutta discussed different types and approaches to research and emphasised the importance of clearly defining a research problem and formulating appropriate research questions as the foundation of a systematic research study.

The third technical session, conducted online, featured Dr. Samarpana Ramesh, Postdoctoral Fellow and Business and Human Rights Researcher, Department of Social Work, School of Social Sciences, Pondicherry University. Her session focused on “Research Design, Sampling, Data Collection and Research Ethics.” Participants were introduced to different aspects of research design and sampling, various methods of data collection, and the ethical considerations that guide responsible academic research.

 

The fourth technical session was conducted by Prof. B. Komow, Dean, Research and Development Cell, Arunachal University of Studies. His session on “Preparing a Mini Research Proposal” provided participants with practical guidance on developing a research proposal. He explained the major components of a proposal, including the identification of a research problem, formulation of objectives and research questions, selection of appropriate research methodology, and systematic presentation of a research plan. The session also provided an interactive platform for participants to clarify their queries and explore possible areas of research. Dr. Fr. A. Amaladoss, Principal, Don Bosco College, Golaghat, actively interacted with the participants and engaged them in discussions on their research interests and possible research topics. He encouraged the participants to nurture their curiosity, identify relevant areas of inquiry, and develop their ideas into meaningful research questions. The interaction added a valuable practical dimension to the session and encouraged participants to think critically about their potential research areas.

The workshop concluded with a Valedictory Function. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Sr. Reena George, Vice Principal (Academics & COE), followed by the felicitation of the Chief Guest.The valedictory session also included the distribution of certificates to the participants. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Piyali Dutta, Research Cell, Don Bosco College, Golaghat, followed by the National Anthem and group photographs.

 

The workshop provided a meaningful academic platform for students, teachers, and research enthusiasts from different institutions to interact with experienced academicians and researchers. The participation of more than 150 participants reflected the growing interest in research and academic inquiry among the student and academic community. The sessions, covering research topics and problem formulation, literature review, referencing, research approaches, research design, sampling, data collection, research ethics, and proposal writing, provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the research process.The programme was organised with the support of the Research Cell and the Department of Political Science, Don Bosco College, Golaghat, and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to fostering a strong research culture and research-oriented academic environment in higher education.
